I have raced at the Bercy Supercross. In 1984, we actually raced it twice. The first race was right after the Daytona Supercross in March, and then we raced again at Bercy in December.
The very first year was cool. But the track was an unknown. When we (the top American Supercross racers) got there, we realized they (the organizers) didn't know fully how to put on a supercross. The track was so narrow, it was hard to pass, it was a 'European' supercross.
But also that first year, I realized how awesome a 'show' can be. Their show was awesome in Bercy! All of us were surprised at how great it was!
My very first thought though, the first time I got to Bercy: "Wow, this is a small track!" But I raced there again in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, and 1989. I've also gone another time after I retired from professional supercross and motocross racing.

Checa wins his fourth Superpole in Salt Lake City
Meanwhile the rain had stopped falling and the track was drying. The long shadow of Checa and then returned to lengthen the runway of Miller Motorsports and in fact behind a fast Smrz who won the second session, we just Checa, trailing by half a second from the Liberty team rider. Behind the two Ducati, goes in Laverty, Biaggi, Guintoli, Corser, a fantastic Badovini and Melandri. Excluding a surprise Leon Haslam, author of a right that the de facto excluded from the struggle for stage three, Haga, Sykes and Camier was clearly not at ease with his number two bike.
This brings us to the last phase of this fifth Superpole seasonal, with the track showed that dry patches as well as strips of water going through it completely. Difficult conditions, where it takes skill, courage and experience. Smrz when it seemed that he could celebrate his first pole seasonal, with a flash Checa crossed the line beyond the pilot of the Czech Republic for only 75 milliseconds. The paw of the lion. Complete the first row the two Yamaha riders Marco Melandri and Laverty, consistently fast in all conditions and that tomorrow along with Biaggi seem the only ones capable of countering the dominance of Spanish Ducati. A Guintoli finally healed opens the second row consists of Corser, Biaggi and Badovini. The Corsair was giving the assault on the first position when he made a right and then almost fell on the lawn situation. Badovini confirms a beautiful reality of Superbike, confirming the good things he had seen in the Superstock 1000 and before that with the Kawasaki team Pedercini.
And tomorrow? Races that await us? The predictions are for a slow improvement in the weather and so it is said that the competitions will be played on a wet track. If the track is dry and if the Ducati’s Carlos will not make the tantrums, the pilot of the Althea team starts big favorite, the Yamaha and Aprilia leaving the task to act as trackers. But if it should rain the races will be open to any outcome, with special attention to Guintoli and Laverty, who proved to be comfortable under water. Has truly demonstrated Camier, but English is still too inconsistent and prone to error. Melandri and Biaggi were always fast, but in case of dry conditions do not seem to keep pace with the wild Checa.
Will still be two games although not miss to see the race to the bottom two have to do the small hours, as the street will be given at 23.30 Italian time.

I was very impressed with the layout of the entire facility - the pits, the press, the track ... the entire presentation.
Everyone from Glen Helen Raceway - Dr. Bud Feldkamp (track owner) to Lori (track manager), their staff including Carl, Steve, Bob did a great job in representing the United States and California in having one of the greatest motocross tracks in America.
I sat with Dr. Wolfgang Srb, President of the FIM Motocross Commission, and he was very impressed with the preparation of everything as well, including the track, especially with the fact that the event was put on with 60 days notice. He thought everything was top notch, and is excited to have the event come back next year.

San Diego Supercross. 1991. I knew that 1991 was going to be my last year racing supercross, because of the wrist injury I suffered at the Gainesville AMA National Motocross in 1989. Little did I know that San Diego would be my last 'real' supercross race.
In this video, you'll see some of that last race. And you'll see defending AMA Camel Supercross Champion Jeff Stanton, Damon Bradsahw, Jeff Ward, Jean-Michel Bayle, Guy Cooper, Bevo Forte, Broc Glover, and more.
I hope you enjoy the video ...

The Square Kilometer Array needs to borrow your hard drive

The Square Kilometer Array, as the name suggests, is going to be huge; 3,000 radio dishes will be spread as far as 2,000 miles in every direction from a central core, offering a full 1,000,000 square meters (that?s one square kilometer) of collection surface. Such a sensitive instrument will probe the very beginnings of the universe, help test general relativity, and map the cosmos in unprecedented detail.
It will also produce reams upon reams of data, so much that it?s estimated that the SKA could need data links with a capacity greater than that of the current Internet-- the whole Internet. Australia is already sinking $80 million into the Pawsey Center in Western Australia, a supercomputing hub that will be petaflop-capable and the third fastest supercomputer in the world when it comes online in 2013 (based on today?s rankings).
But even that might not be enough. By 2020, when the SKA is only partially complete, it will already be churning out such massive amounts of data that two Oxford researchers have been looking into cloud computing alternatives to help manage the mess. Housing the data with something like Amazon?s cloud storage service would be expensive, but distribute that data across the many desktops and mainframes at universities and institutes across the globe, and things start to click.
Researchers at the Aussie-based SKA project don?t aim to stop there. They see individuals that are not affiliated with the SKA or any of its affiliate research institutions also opening up their desktops to the array?s application. And of course, there?s a quid pro quo here: give up some computing power, get some data. The initiative could offer free access to astronomers--professional and amateur alike--in exchange for some processing power.
It seems a good deal all around if it eventually happens (South Africa is also vying for the SKA, and a decision won?t be made regarding its final location until next year). For SKA, it saves the trouble of constantly adding computing capacity (and cooling that capacity via a huge energy bill). This way, that computing (and the energy suck, and the heat) is distributed between hard drives that are already running anyhow. But it would also engage the public and the global academic community, offering everyone access to one of the world?s biggest and baddest science instruments.

As the West Region ends for a while, and East region gets ready to start up ... In 250 West Supercross 2010, Jake Weimer and Trey Canard are showing a lot of confidence right now. I'm very impressed with both of these racers right now. This past race at Anaheim was a good example for both of them.
Series points leader Jake Weimer has a great heat race with a win, even after that heat was red-flagged. Jake had some trouble in the Main Event, but showed his smarts by charging hard the full 15 laps, coming up to eighth at the finish ... that could literally save his season and potentially the championship title.
Trey had some problems in his heat, but came back very strong in the final - he won the 250 Main in Anaheim. That shows a lot of maturity from him as a rider.

The project mapped more than 43,000 galaxies picked from the Two-Micron All-SkySurvey (2MASS), which scanned the entire sky in three near-infrared wavelengths. But 2MASS alone offered an incomplete picture. To achieve the third dimension, astronomers needed to know not only how galaxies relate spatially on a flat map, but how far away they are from Earth and each other. So the 2MASS Redshift Survey began measuring the galaxies? redshifts, one by one, using two telescopes in Arizona and Chile.
Redshifting is the way in which a galaxy?s light is stretched into longer wavelengths by the expansion of the universe. The farther a galaxy is from Earth, the greater its redshift. By analyzing those measurements, the 2MRS was able to achieve that important third dimension, and to produce the map you see above.
But 2MRS isn?t just notable for mapping faraway galaxies. It also made great strides closer to home. Regions nearer the Milky Way tend to be difficult to observe, as they are obscured by the dust and gas in our own galaxy. The near-infrared wavelengths employed by 2MASS are better at penetrating this dust, giving us a better look at our own galactic neighborhood.
A higher res version of the pic is available here.

Sheridan Morais has so far failed to live up to his and his fans’ expectations, but this has partly been down to a dose of misfortune that has prevented him from finishing on the podium. The Johannesburg, South Africa rider was having an excellent race at Monza, in the second round of the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup, but he crashed on oil deposited by the S1000RR of Sylvain Barrier, bringing an end to a promising race. Before his crash the Kawasaki Lorenzini by Leoni rider was battling with several other riders for the podium and this is a clear sign that the young South African’s package is a valid one and that he can now aim for better results from the Misano round onwards.
You had a fantastic weekend in Monza until bad luck ruined your plans. Are you more disappointed about the result itself or the fact that you could stay with the leading group?
“Yes, all weekend Team Lorenzini Kawasaki and I worked hard and in the race it was paying off until Barrier had some bad luck with his engine failure. This bad luck was passed on to me when I crashed in his oil but that’s racing… I am disappointed with the result as we were fighting for the podium! “
Despite what happened, you showed a lot of improvement from the Assen Round. Are you and the team heading in the right direction?
“We are definitely making great progress as we learn the bike and test different things! We have made big improvements since Assen and when the bad luck is not there then we are looking to win races.”
How competitive is the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup this year?
“The Superstock 1000 class is extremely competitive as all of the riders are looking to make it big and move up to the premier classes. Also the manufacturers count on this class to sell their road going superbikes so this adds to the level of the class.”
The next round is Misano, another home track for your team…
“Misano is coming up and with it being the teams other home round I am looking to please them with a great result. As I type this e-mail I am at the gym and then going to the moto-cross track in preparation for the Misano round….!”

Casey Stoner test at Jerez Honda 1000 of 2012
Casey has completed a total of 50 laps (221 miles), turning both the Bridgestones used this season with the 800cc bike with new tires that prototype in 2012.
HRC has sent some mechanics and engineers at Jerez official Repsol Honda Team who assisted in the work of today’s technical development team HRC. This first day of testing provided valuable feedback on the new prototype at the first stage of development.
The new bike
The new bike is based on the concept of the RC212V and born of the experience gained in the last phase of development of the 800cc. HRC has been working on this project in late 2009, with the formalization of new rules providing for the premier class, the 2012 season, 1000cc engine with a maximum bore of 81 mm and a maximum of 4 cylinders.
A key element of the new engines will be the consumer , being manned by one thousand future regulation with a 21-liter tank, as the current 800cc. Repsol has recently sent this to Japan in some engineers to develop a gas and a lubricant for the new bike and Repsol techonology Centre engineers are working on a gasoline can provide better performance in terms of consumption with maximum power.
In 2011, each manufacturer has available eight days to test the prototypes next year using the official drivers, so after this first day of testing performed by Casey Stoner, the HRC will decide the next test program to take advantage of the remaining seven days continue the development of new prototype. If the weather will be positive it is possible that tomorrow Stoner back on track for a further day of testing.
Dani Pedrosa with his doctors is considering both options: surgery to reduce the fracture with a plate, or let the bone balances alone.
CASEY STONER: “Everything went very well, it was a very positive test. It’s great to drive a thousand and feel the power of the engine. I really enjoyed myself and I’m happy because everything we tried worked well. I’m so sorry that Dani is not here and has been unable to try the bike because his impressions are important for development. I hope that the HRC may have its counterpart as soon as possible because we need more data to be ready for next season. Today we focused on one particular aspect, we made ??an attempt to understand how the new bike, how it behaves under braking and the like, keeping in mind also the problems that we have this year with the RC212V. The stability curve in the front entrance to look very good, the more stable braking. I was curious to see how it would be the power output, and is very sweet, so no problem. We have not made ??major changes to the development regarding the organization of the 800 and the feeling is very similar, so I’m very satisfied. ”
Shuhei Nakamoto – HRC EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT : “It ‘s been a good day of testing, the bike worked well as we hoped and there were no particular problems. Of course, this is only the first day and we need to improve several aspects, but we have tried many things and everything went well. Casey is happy with the more powerful engine and driving conditions and also continue to work on the chassis. Unfortunately, Daniel is not here and would have been better to have the finding of both drivers. In any case, Casey’s comments were similar to those received by testers and this is positive. We hope to have soon the impressions of Denmark to continue to work on the development of the bike. “

The International Motorcycling Federation announced 11 teams have passed the latest round of applications for the 2012 MotoGP season.
MotoGP promoter Dorna and the International Road Racing Teams Association selected 11 new teams representing 16 riders to continue with the application process for the 2012 season. Applicants submitted detailed plans for participation to the IRTA by May 14. The FIM announced in April that 14 teams and 21 riders had passed the previous step but the list was whittled down to 13 teams after the May 13-15 Le Mans round.
The 11 remaining teams will have until June 3 to provide a security deposit with the IRTA. Dorna and the IRTA will then decide during the June 3-5 Catalunya Grand Prix which teams will be offered a contract to race in the 2012 season. Teams wishing to participate as Claiming Rule Teams will also have to receive approval from the Grand Prix Commission. While there?s no guarantee all 11 remaining teams will pass this final step, the MotoGP grid will be a lot larger than its current 17-rider lineup.
The FIM did not announce which teams had made it past the recent round of cuts, though it is believed that Norton had applied for a team with two riders. Following the Catalunya grand Prix, the FIM will release the names of the teams invited to join the existing teams for the 2012 MotoGP season.

Not as fun as it sounds

In games like World of Warcraft, gamers can virtually "farm gold", which essentially means playing in a tedious and repetitive way to score some in-game currency--it might mean fighting the same bad guy over and over again, or completing a small task a few thousand times. Players (or, in this case, slavedrivers) actually sell that virtual gold for real-life currency, usually to people in developed countries who want a better character but don't feel like arduously spending days leveling up, and would rather just pay for the stats. Apparently, the guards at Liu's prison realized that they could make even more money forcing prisoners to farm gold than by forcing them to perform manual labor. The 300 prisoners forced to farm gold could earn their guards up to $1,000 per day, not that the prisoners ever saw a single yuan of it.
This kind of forced virtual labor seems like a not uncommon occurrence; anywhere there are lots of people compelled to do manual labor and a way to make money doing it, these kinds of situations will arise. There are virtual sweatshops in which workers must play for 12 hours a day, though accusations of prison virtual labor is new. China has made minor efforts to regulate the trade in virtual goods, but there are still thought to be around 100,000 full-time gold farmers in the country.
